RIFLES

GERMAN Model Gewher 98 Mauser bolt-action long rifle # 135a (8mm).  Likely a WWI-era sporting or sniping conversion of a Gewher 98 rifle, complete with "lange-vizir" roller-coaster rear sight and twin set-triggers.  This rifle has a solid front tipping-type scope mount with a period OIGEE (Berlin) Luxor 6X scope (having excellent optics).  There are several interesting and puzzling aspects of this rifle, however. Though based on the Gewher 98 configuration, the receiver is a 1940-dated Sauer & Son 98k receiver (with matching-bolt having correct WaA37 markings) finished "in the white" like a Gew.98 receiver would be. The wood and barrel-bands are from a 1909 Argentine military rifle.  There is some decorative scrollwork on the triggerguard and magazine-floorplate. The cleaning-rod is missing, and it the rifle is not import-marked.  Overall condition is VERY GOOD PLUS and the bore is excellent and quite bright. PHOTO . . . $1950.     C&R

GERMAN Model 98k Mauser bolt-action rifle # 6279 (8mm), a single-rune rifle mfg. under SS control at Mathausen concentration-camp for Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1943.  A non-import "bringback" in Excellent condition, with most original finish remaining (though bluing is a bit faded) and all-matching stamped numbers.  The bore very bright with crisp rifling.   All Nazi markings intact (no final proofs, of course) and 100% correct for type, laminated stock has likely been refinished in the past with one insignificant gouge on right side.  Includes front sight-hood and cleaning-rod. Not import-marked. PHOTO . . . $1250.   C&R

Note:  This rifle was listed and sold by us with this same description on Nov. 18th of last year and was immediately sold (with a large number of the usual "I'll take it if the deal falls through" types of messages).  After the sale a few "know it all" types started posting online that some of the numbers on this rifle looked "funny" to them (based entirely on blurry photos the buyer took) and claimed that it likely had been restamped to match by some "bubba".  Some even shouted to the heavens that Empire Arms was intentionally selling fakies and ripping people off (it's easy to be brave when you post online anonymously).  The buyer became uncomfortable due to these posts and we offered him a complete refund (including shipping both ways).  Since its return this rifle has been personally inspected by over a dozen experts in this field, and agreed on the following:  (1) this rifle is indeed a GENUINE single-rune 98k rifle as stated above (no one thought the rune-marking had been faked or that it had been altered from a standard bnz 43 98k);  (2) a few of the bolt-parts and barrel-bands have possibly been stamped to match, but none of these experts could tell if this was done in the field or by someone after the war (it certainly was not recently done);  (3) the stock is likely a field-replacement. . . the original number in the barrel-channel has been struck-through and 6279 stamped beside it.

This rifle is what it is. . . no "all-matching" examples of a single-rune bnz-43 98k could be located to compare it to (if indeed ANY actually exist) and we are re-offering this rifle for sale AS IS with the above caveat.  This is NOT a Russian-capture and it is NOT a cobbled-up obvious fake. Since this rifle was produced utilizing concentration-camp laborers who were literally starving to death there are some aspects of the rifle that may not look correct compared to a standard factory 98k. Our usual return-policy applies if not satisfied with what you get. . . you should (by this description and the photos provided) now know what to expect.
